Rural Education SIG: A Collective Voice for the Benefit of Rural Students

The Rural Special Interest Group (Rural Education SIG) of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) consists of professionals committed to supporting scholarly conversation about the lives of rural people, places and schools through educational research.

Under the auspices of AERA, Special Interest Groups, such as Rural Education SIG, provide a professional support system for individuals drawn together by a common interest in a field of study, teaching, or research. For Rural Education SIG, the field is sizeable with approximately 50 percent of the nations’ public schools and about 38 percent of public school students located in rural areas. Members of Rural Education SIG have the potential to impact policies and practices that affect rural students. This is particularly important as rural schools face even more challenges with the No Child Left Behind Act. A collective voice is needed now more than ever.

Your membership is important. Each year AERA allocates annual meeting sessions based on the number of AERA members within the SIG. A large SIG membership means more opportunities for research in rural education to reach the educational research community. More members mean more program slots for the annual meeting which increases the chances for rural education concerns to be a part of the research and reform conversation.

BECOME A MEMBER

In order to become a member of the Rural Education SIG, one must be a member of AERA. You can join the Rural SIG at the same time that you renew or begin your AERA membership. AERA has implemented a new membership database and management system. The internet component provides full e-commerce so that members may renew and/or join at any time online. If you join some time during the year after renewing for the AERA membership, your Rural Education SIG membership will have the same expiration date as your AERA membership.
